Volume #47 – Euroversion 3rd May
It is our great pleasure to be able to bring together such a rich diversity of talented speakers for an evening of cerebral stimulation.
Our speakers are all checking their slides, rehearsing their timings and ensuring their vocal cords are in tip top condition for the next encounter of Ignite Liverpool.
Celebrating people from all walks of life as they talk about their passions, their projects and in some cases their strange habits……. but this time we’re especially celebrating Liverpool hosting Eurovision.
Speaker: Cath Holland
Talk title: “All pop stars should go Nudie” Ukranian refugee Nudie Cohn aged 11 fled to America to escape Czarist Russia. He became THE tailor for country stars from the 1950s onwards, dressing Elvis, Gram Parsons, Johnny Cash in rhinestoe encrusted suits, bling worthy of any Eurovision entry. Contemporary artists like Jack White and Wild Beasts’ Hayden Thorpe retain the Nudie suit love. I explore its ongoing appeal.
Speaker: Liam Brierley
Talk title: Although we love the music and theatrical side of the contest, not many realise just how much data Eurovision generates! That data might hold the secret of the elusive “winning formula” but we need maths and stats to find it. I’ll give a brief tour of how some creative academics and data scientists have analysed jury and public voting patterns to uncover what makes a great Eurovision entry in lyrics, theme and performance.
