New Tricks – Speakers notes for November

Posted on 29 October 2013 by Neil Morrin

If you are one of our wonderful presenters then do read on, this post holds important information just for you…..  such as Deadlines, Timing and mastering Powerpoint.

First off – we’d like to say a big thank you to you for joining Ignite Club by agreeing to speak at our next event on 14th November 2013.

We hope you are as excited about it as we are, we have had some brilliant talks over the years and we really want yours to be brilliant too.

Powerpoint

Yes, we really did say Powerpoint, it acts as a leveller! So not matter how good a speaker you may be, the template really makes you hone your skills.  This is a link to download Powerpoint presentation template (right click and save as) which we do insist on presenters using. The document is a template, it has four sample slides and you can choose which slide you would care to use as the background to your presentation.

NB: No Video is allowed and please no pitching for work.

Timing

They say that the secret of great British comedy is …….. Timing, well it is also true of a great Ignite Talk.

Remember presentations are 5 minutes long and consist of 20 slides set to change every 15 Seconds. So the best talks are the ones where there is an image on the screen and you talk over it.

Don’t go for lots of text as there won’t be the time to read it.

We normally set the timings on the Powerpoint slides once you have submitted your presentation a week before the event but do feel free to do it yourself if you know how.

Deadline

We do require that you get your presentation to us a week before the event. This is so we can check the content for any overt advertising plus we will need to set up the timings correctly on your presentation. Long gone are the days of someone manually moving your presentation forward with a stop watch in hand.

So we will require your finished presentation at least a week before, on the 7th November, we will remind you if you forget.

For background material please check out this website where you will find a great selection of videos from previous Ignite Liverpool sessions, these will give you a guide as to the best way to deliver your presentation.

The Venue

Leaf Cafe is based on Bold Street near the middle of the top half of Bold Street. They have food and drink available for you don’t have to dash home for Dinner.

Buses:
It is best served by the 86, 80 and 82 at the top of Bold Street.
Trains:
Central station is only 5 minutes away at the bottom of Bold Street.
Parking:
Parking is allowed on Bold Street after 6pm and there is usually plenty of spaces. Other parking is available on Duke Street and Mount Pleasant which both have carparks and again are only 5 minutes away on foot.
Cycling:
There are some very handy places to lock your bike on Bold Street in the Square that leads to FACT cinema.

Timings on the Evening

As a speaker please arrive at 5.45
Doors will open to the public at 6pm
Talks start at 6.45
Talks End at 9.00pm  unless we are overwhelmed by speakers.

Post Event

We Live Stream the video from the event throughout the evening so if your friends can’t make it but want to watch then can I recommend that they book a ticket for the Live Stream.

After the event we produce the short five minute videos for the Ignite Liverpool site, the Youtube Channel and the Igniteshow channel.

And Finally

If you are unable to commit to presenting on 14th November then please do let us know as soon as possible so we can recruit another speaker.

….. and finally ….. and finally we really want this to be an enjoyable experience for you because if it is then the audiences picks up on it and will enjoy your presentation all the more. So if you have any questions, worries or just want to talk to a real human being before the event then do get back in touch with us and we can pair you up with an Ignite buddy, someone who has already braved the stage and is willing to share their experience.

Ignite events take place all over the world and it is truly a fascinating event to present at and to be part of.
